A New Approach to Binocular Indirect Ophthalmoscopy

The Arclight Holo binocular indirect ophthalmoscope (BIO) is a truly portable, solar-powered, and cost-effective alternative to traditional BIOs. Designed to improve access to high-quality eye care, it enables widefield retinal examination, disc and macula assessment, anterior segment evaluation, and fundal red reflex testing.

Why the Arclight Holo BIO?

Traditional BIOs are bulky, expensive, and reliant on consumables like bulbs and batteries. The Holo BIO overcomes these barriers by being:

  • Truly Portable – Weighs 97g, pocket-sized, and wearable.
  • Sustainable – Solar-powered and USB-C rechargeable, eliminating battery waste.
  • User-Friendly – Five-level LED illumination enhances clarity and patient comfort.
  • Versatile – Used for posterior and anterior segment examination, with an optional Maglens for enhanced magnification.
  • Accessible – Cost-effective to expand eye care in all settings.

From Concept to Clinic

The Holo BIO has undergone a decade of research and refinement, with extensive testing in UK, Kenya, and Indonesia. Key milestones include:

  • Identifying the need – Addressing the lack of affordable BIOs in resource-limited settings.
  • Field testing – Comparing its performance to traditional BIOs in real-world clinics.
  • Validation studies – Demonstrating high-quality imaging for accurate diagnosis.
  • Scaling up – Securing regulatory approval and clinical adoption worldwide.

Clinical Applications

Research has shown the Holo BIO is effective in diagnosing and managing conditions such as:

  • Diabetic Retinopathy (DR) – Rapid, reliable screening even in challenging environments.
  • Retinopathy of Prematurity (ROP) – Widefield imaging supports neonatal eye screening.
  • Glaucoma & Optic Disc AssessmentMaglens attachment enhances optic nerve evaluation.
  • Anterior Segment Examination – Useful for assessing cornea, conjunctiva, and sclera.

Training & Education

The teaching mirror allows observers to see a live view of the examiner’s image, making it ideal for medical training and skill development. Workshops have shown that clinicians and trainees can quickly learn to use the device, supporting its role in education.

Looking Ahead

The Arclight Holo BIO is already improving global access to high-quality eye examinations. Future developments include:

  • Expanding integration into screening programmes for DR and ROP.
  • Increasing training initiatives to support wider adoption.
  • Developing a camera attachment to capture and document the view seen through the BIO, aiding diagnosis, record-keeping, and training.

Availability

The Arclight Holo BIO will be available to purchase from 21 February 2025.
