Research at St Andrews

We have a strong research community here in the School of Medicine, with interests transcending far and wide across the scope of medicine and health.

The structure of the School of Medicine is developing constantly, with greater foundational links with our NHS colleagues growing every day. With every new bit of expertise and each new research interest, the School’s remit grows further, and therefore our structure needs to allow for this too. As you can see below, our research colleagues within the School are predominantly split into four divisions. However, to enable and encourage collaboration and freedom to explore, we also have Departments within the School that represent key areas where we have great strength, as well as Research Centres, which are specified areas of interest that are reflected across the School, and the wider-University.

This structure is designed in such a way that collaboration and interdisciplinary work are facilitated and encouraged without barriers, to enable an effective and inclusive environment and culture in which research at St Andrews can thrive. Some of our current collaborations across the School and the University see us branching out into domains such as Psychology, Physics, Biology, Geography, Business, and even Philosophy!
