Certainly not. Clinical Academia can be a career option at any time, and with your vast experience you could be invaluable to the field!

Of course, what you want to do here is entirely your choice, but whether it’s finally putting your interests and curiosities to the test through extensive research within the School, or furthering the learning of our many Medical students here at St Andrews by sharing your experiences and lessons, there is a place for you here, and a place for you in Clinical Academia.

At this level, we anticipate that the University would become your primary host institution, and therefore you would receive a new contract from ourselves, with input from NHS Scotland to determine your clinical role and responsibilities. In special circumstances, we may be able to reverse this, however this would first need to be discussed with the NHS Scotland Deanery.

This is your choice. Clinical Academia is a flexible role that can be tailored to the needs of the individual and their partner institutions. You may be asked to take on considerable teaching responsibilities, if this is something that interests you; or alternatively, you may be asked to head up a research lab group, division or centre. This can be discussed right from the start when you first begin considering Clinical Academia, and it can be adapted if desired – it’s your career to forge how you choose.
