School hosts first orthopaedic short course
On 31 August, the School of Medicine hosted its first orthopaedic offering, “Lower Limb Surgical Approaches,” as part of its short-course programme.
This cadaveric course was aimed at doctors training in Orthopaedic Surgery within Scotland and run by experienced faculty from NHS Fife’s Orthopaedic Surgery Department. This includes Clinical Teaching Fellow Dr Phillip Walmsley and Honorary Senior Lecturer Dr Muhammad Adeel Akhtar, both consultant orthopaedic surgeons
Trainers focused on providing delegates with practical skills in the various surgical approaches used in the lower limb for both emergency and planned surgical situations. The course involved a mix of cadaveric teaching and short tutorials using clinical cases.
Everyone enjoyed the day, and the feedback was extremely positive. Attendees praised the course as “well thought out and delivered” and noted the excellent instructor-to-learner ratio. Plans are underway to expand on this success with additional iterations of this course and development of more courses on other surgical areas and techniques.
