The Lived Experience of Sleep Disturbance in Young Adults with Eating Disorders

This project will investigate how sleep is affected in individuals with eating disorders – exploring how co-existing disordered sleep and eating can influence daily functioning, recovery and wellbeing.

Eating disorder prevalence has more than doubled since the start of the 21st century (1).

Given this increasing pervasiveness, research into eating disorders, their effects, and how best to manage them is of great importance. However, currently, little research has been done into the relationship between eating disorders and sleep, despite both nutrition and sleep being key pillars of health. As such, this study aims to explore this intersection to understand the lived experiences of those experiencing eating and sleep disturbances in order to better guide management strategies.

Intended Outcomes

This qualitative, interview-based study ultimately aims are to:

Shape Future Research
Develop successful management strategies
Influence clinical support services
Raise awareness of sleep challenges in the eating disorder community
