Our Stories – Case Studies from St Andrews

On this page, you can find a number of case studies from here at St Andrews. We spoke with a number of people from various stages of our track, to try and gather more information about their experiences to date, and how the University of St Andrews has helped them with achieving their next steps.

Dr Phil Walmsley

Clinical Senior Lecturer & Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon

“The thing to realise is that Medicine has changed now. Once upon a time it was a clinical career for the main part, but now there’s an increased recognition for portfolio careers, meaning you can tack on anything you want to … Could be education, research, private work, politics, or healthcare improvement, a whole range of things … The important thing is that there’s no right or wrong way to do it

“Don’t let anyone tell you that you can’t be an academic in Primary Care. Academic General Practice is fantastic. I have a career that is the envy of most of my peers. The flexibility, the autonomy, the control that I have over it, and the joy that I get in doing all the different things”

Dr Sarah Mills

Clinical Senior Lecturer in Academic General Practice

Dr Andrew Blaikie

Clinical Senior Lecturer in Ophthalmology

“I’m a Clinical Academic, but I’d say my main strengths really are teaching, mentorship, supervision and the development of ideas”

“I was perhaps a bit of a disillusioned Medical Student, and I wasn’t really sure what I wanted to be when I grew up, but it was in my GP training rotation I realised I quite liked this and this was probably for me [ophthalmology] … My top tip would be to be able to recognise your strengths and look around to see who you can work with to get the best results”

“Growing up I always thought I’d want to be more of a scientist than a clinician. I went with Medicine, but that curiosity for science stuck with me

“I didn’t really know anything about academia at all, but there was an email that came through about doing summer projects. So I actually just sent Prof. Sullivan an email to say I was really interested in his work and asked for a chat, and so then he introduced me to the big world of academia  …  Now I’m tailoring and applying the skills that I learnt to my own interests”

Nimue Romeikat

Student
