Understanding Cognition: A Workshop for Health and Social Care Professionals

Cognition is central to how people function in all aspects of their daily lives but is often disrupted by illness and injury. Health and social care professionals will benefit from an understanding of cognition, which can then be applied to strategies within their work. The course will be a half-day course covering the domains of cognition – attention, working memory, memory and executive function with opportunities for discussion around applications to delegates’ work. This will include strategies to support people optimise or adapt for challenges to their cognition. Programme plan:
The course will cover:
- Introduction to cognition
- The challenges that changes in cognition can have on everyday life
- A framework of cognition
- Understanding Attention
- Management of attention challenges – discussion and presentation
- Understanding Memory
- Management of memory challenges – discussion and presentation
- Understanding working memory
- Optimising working memory – discussion and presentation
- Understanding executive function
- Techniques for addressing executive function challenges
- Reflection and actions for applying to delegates’ workplace.

Course duration
1 half day on Teams (9AM – 12.30PM).
Pre-requisites
- Participants must have access to a device with internet connection, webcam and microphone, as well as a valid email address to register with the online learning platform in order to attend the course. Further details.
