Dr Alun Hughes Wins Outstanding Teacher Award at Student Led Teaching Awards
Dr Alun Hughes, Senior Lecturer at the School of Medicine, has been announced as the winner of the Outstanding Teacher (Science and Medicine) category at this year’s 1413 Teaching Excellence Awards, a prestigious, student‑led celebration of teaching excellence at the University of St Andrews.

The awards, run by the Students’ Association, recognise exceptional commitment to the student learning experience and are based entirely on student nominations and feedback. This year, more than 200 nominations were submitted across 11 categories, reflecting the high standard of teaching across the University. Student selection panels noted that Dr Hughes’ award is a well‑deserved recognition of the significant and positive impact he has had on his students.
Student nominations highlighted Dr Hughes’ inclusive and thoughtful approach to teaching, praising his commitment to ensuring all students feel supported and confident in their learning. In particular, students noted how he tailors his teaching to accommodate different levels of prior knowledge, carefully building understanding in a way that fosters confidence and engagement.
Professor Deborah Williamson, Dean of Medicine, congratulated Dr Hughes on the achievement, saying:
“This award is a wonderful recognition of Dr Hughes’ dedication to teaching and to our students. His commitment to inclusive, supportive education exemplifies the values of the School of Medicine, and we are immensely proud to see his impact recognised by students in this way.”
The Students’ Association commended Dr Hughes for his fantastic commitment to learning and teaching, acknowledging the deep investment he has made in fostering a love of learning among students.
Dr Hughes will receive his award at the 1413 Teaching Awards Ceremony, taking place on Tuesday 21 April 2026, from 17:00 to 19:00, in Parliament Hall.
