What role do universities play in tackling society’s biggest challenges?

The Universities Scotland Universal Partners campaign showcases how Scotland’s universities work alongside government, public services, businesses and communities to support economic growth, improve public services, drive progress towards net zero and help tackle child poverty.

We’re delighted to see sleep research led by School of Medicine Research Fellow, Dr Emma Gale, featured as part of the campaign. Through the Scotland Speaks project, the largest ever survey of sleep health among Scottish residents, conducted in partnership with the World Sleep Society, researchers at the university gathered vital insights into child and adolescent sleep health. This work is being translated into action through Sleep Well Scotland, which has worked with schools, families and communities across Fife, Dundee, Angus, and Perth & Kinross, reaching more than 2,000 children and helping shape practical solutions to improve sleep health and wellbeing.

The research was recently highlighted at the Scottish Parliament and continues to support a growing national conversation about the importance of sleep for children’s health, learning and life chances.

This is a powerful example of how we, as a university, contribute far beyond education to improve lives across Scotland and beyond.
