Dissecting Art: Modern Perspectives and Historic Medicine Workshop

On Friday 9th of March 2018 the School of Medicine in collaboration with the School of English Language Teaching, the School of Art History and the Special Collections Division of the University Library hosted a workshop in the Dissecting Room entitled Dissecting Art: Modern Perspectives and Historic Medicine for the International Foundation Programme for Medicine students.
This workshop was a one-of-a-kind session during which rare books, historical anatomy models, historical medical equipment and historical potted anatomy specimens were used to stimulate discussion on ethical dilemmas of gender, criminal justice and congenital difference. The rare books included a copy of Vesalius’ De Humani Corporis Fabrica from 1568 and the historical anatomy models included a Ziegler three-dimensional wax brainstem model that was based on Professor Florence Rena Sabin’s textbook entitled An Atlas of the Medulla and Midbrain published in 1901. The workshop was well received with excellent feedback from the students.
The above project stemmed from a teaching development fund awarded in 2016 that is still on-going. With the insight and expertise from Dawn, Emma and Ourania the project has evolved and now encompasses the School of English Language Teaching, the School of Art History and the School of Medicine.
