Fundal (‘Red’) Reflex
The fundal reflex (aka ‘red’) test is a simple and quick yet highly effective means to check for congenital cataract and retinoblastoma in babies and young children.
Our training programme aims to teach the most effective way to perform this test as well interpret and make a referral decision.

In 2022 the World Health Organisation, for the first time, recommended eye examinations as part of routine post-natal care in low and middle income countries.
The case for this change was in part based on the growing evidence base for the practical and scalable delivery of effective yet low cost fundal (red) reflex examinations with the Arclight.
In response to this new recommendation in collaboration with the Tanzanian Ministry of Health, the Kilimanjaro Christian Medical Centre and the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine we have created instructional videos to support the training and delivery of fundal (‘red’) reflex examinations in LMICs. This is part of a wider study funded by USAID which is evaluating the feasibility of wider effective implementation.
The team includes eye care professionals, videographer and project managers from Tanzania, London and St Andrews.
There are 5 instructional videos currently available in English and Swahili. These can be viewed on YouTube and downloaded from Vimeo in various resolutions.
