Picture1Angela Martinelli and Chiara Diquigiovanni, both working in the Paracchini research group, helped run the First Lego League (FLL; http://www.firstlegoleague.org/) tournament in St Andrews. FLL is a global science and technology competition that challenges young people to think like scientists and engineers. It involves over 250,000 young people every year. This initiative is run in Scotland through one of working groups of the Young Academy of Scotland (http://www.firstlegoleague.org/ ).  Children have fun learning how to build, test and program a robot while thinking about real world problems.  FLL aims to inspire children and get  them excited about science and to learn to work in a team.

Nine teams of about eight children took part in the St Andrews Regional Tournament.  The projects focussed on solving waste problems.  The winning team — Uni-Bears– will compete in the UK Finals!  “It was an exciting and enjoyable day!” said Angela “It was great to see the enthusiasm of the participants when they presented their ideas to reduce trash.”.  Chiara added “It was fascinating seeing the creativity and the efforts put in by the teams to recycle rubbish!“ and “How many wonderful ideas to reuse waste items, such as crisp packaging! “
