Mackenzie Institute co-directors announced
Professor Peter Donnelly and Professor Frank Gunn-Moore.
On 8 November, Master of the United College Professor Ineke De Moortel announced the appointment of Professors Peter Donnelly and Frank Gunn-Moore as Co-Directors of the Sir James Mackenzie Institute for Early Diagnosis. Prof. Donnelly, Chair in Public Health at the School of Medicine and former Mackenzie Institute Director, will take on the role of Co-Director (Clinical). Prof. Gunn-Moore, Professor of Molecular Neurobiology at the School of Biology, will serve as Co-Director (Science). Their Co-Directorship builds on the interdisciplinary and cross-School nature of the Mackenzie Institute, with a vision to enhance the link between fundamental research and real-life applications to early diagnosis.
The Mackenzie Institute was established in 2019 to offer an inspiring and supportive environment committed to fostering ideas, sharing of knowledge and skills around earlier diagnosis of human disease. The Institute draws from existing expertise in early diagnosis that is distributed across disciplines, including Medicine, Biology, Chemistry, Computer Science, Geography & Sustainable Development, Mathematics & Statistics, Physics & Astronomy and Psychology & Neuroscience.
Reflecting on the announcement, Prof. Donnelly said: “I am delighted to be joined in the leadership of Mackenzie by my friend and colleague Prof. Frank Gunn-Moore. As co-directors from different and complimentary backgrounds, we will be emphasising the multidisciplinary and cross-School nature of our early diagnostic initiatives.”
“Biomedicine in St Andrews is a rich vein of research spanning many different schools from the fundamental though to the clinical,” added Prof. Gunn-Moore. “I hope to help bring our excellent research under one banner so that we can make a true difference to the public health.”
The School of Medicine looks forward to following the evolution of the Institute under this exciting new interdisciplinary leadership team.
