University collaboration supports Scotland’s digital prescribing transformation
A collaborative research project involving colleagues from the University of St Andrews has been accepted for publication in the International Journal of Pharmacy Practice, highlighting the important role of academic and NHS partnerships in supporting healthcare innovation across Scotland.
The study formed part of a national programme led by Public Services Delivery (PSD) Scotland to implement digital prescribing and dispensing across the country. Researchers worked together to explore community pharmacy perspectives on the evolving digital prescribing pathway, examining both opportunities and challenges associated with the transition to new digital processes.
The research provides valuable insights into how digital prescribing is experienced within community pharmacy settings and will help inform the continued development and implementation of Scotland’s national digital prescribing programme. The findings will also be of interest to healthcare organisations internationally that are exploring similar digital transformation initiatives.
In addition to its academic contribution, the study will directly support the work of the Digital Prescribing and Dispensing Team within PSD Scotland, helping to ensure that future developments are informed by the experiences and expertise of pharmacy professionals working at the frontline of patient care.
The publication represents one of several nationally significant collaborations between NHS partners and the University of St Andrews, demonstrating the impact that joint research can have in shaping healthcare policy, improving services, and supporting innovation across the health sector.
By bringing together academic expertise and practical healthcare experience, partnerships such as this help generate evidence that can lead to meaningful improvements in patient care and service delivery, both within Scotland and beyond.
