PREVENT Dementia Programme Hosts Annual Scientific General Assembly
The PREVENT dementia programme, led by Professor Craig Ritchie, Professor of Brain Health and Neurodegenerative Medicine at the University of St Andrews, continues to advance research into mid‑life risk factors and the earliest biological signs of dementia. Sponsored by the University, the programme brings together experts across disciplines to better understand how dementia develops long before symptoms appear.
On 8–9 September, PREVENT held its annual Scientific General Assembly, an event that gathers researchers working with the programme’s growing dataset. This year’s meeting was kindly hosted at the University of Cambridge by Professor John O’Brien, the programme’s brain imaging lead.
The assembly brought together researchers from academic institutions across the UK and Ireland, including the University of St Andrews, University of Cambridge, Imperial College London, the University of Edinburgh and Trinity College Dublin, alongside international colleagues from Ohio University and Haukeland University Hospital.
Throughout the two‑day meeting, attendees showcased ongoing projects using the PREVENT dataset, shared emerging findings, and discussed new approaches to understanding early markers of dementia. The event also provided a valuable forum for developing new collaborations, with researchers generating a wide range of ideas to take forward over the coming year.
The PREVENT programme continues to grow as a major resource for dementia research, supporting work that aims to improve early detection, prevention strategies and long‑term outcomes for individuals at risk.
