Dr Jaclyn Pearson awarded AMS Springboard funding to kickstart research at St Andrews

The School of Medicine is delighted to announce that Dr Jaclyn Pearson has been awarded Academy of Medical Sciences (AMS) Springboard funding, which provides vital support for early-career researchers establishing their work in the UK. Springboard offers a bespoke package of support to biomedical researchers at the start of their first independent post to help launch their research careers. This includes funding of up to £125,000 over two years and access to the Academy’s acclaimed mentoring and career development programme.
Dr Pearson’s award is part of the AMS’ largest-ever funding initiative for early-career researchers. The Academy will invest £7.6 million to support 62 exceptional scientists across 41 UK institutions tackling urgent health challenges, including Alzheimer’s disease, cancer, obesity, addiction, and climate change impacts on health.
A lecturer in the School’s Infection and Global Health Research Division, Dr Pearson came to St Andrews in January 2024 from Melbourne, Australia, bringing expertise in infection and immunity. Her research focuses on understanding how bacterial pathogens interact with the immune system, with the goal of identifying new therapeutic strategies for infectious diseases.
“This funding is a fantastic opportunity to build my research programme at St Andrews,” said Dr. Pearson. “I am excited to establish new collaborations, mentor emerging researchers, and contribute to the great scientific community here.”
