Under the Act, cadavers may be used by people with an interest and need to study human anatomy in premises that are licensed for that purpose. The premises covered by the Act are the Dissecting Room (DR), the Monroe Maximilian Broad Anatomy Resource Centre (MMBARC) and all anatomy preparation rooms.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<ol start=\"2\">\n<li>Under The Act, its Regulations, Code of Practice and local rules, staff and delegates are required to properly respect those people who have donated their bodies. Breaches to the Act make a person liable for University disciplinary procedures and, in addition, may be a criminal offence.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<ol start=\"3\">\n<li>Respect for Donated Human Material. The opportunity for Medical delegates to learn anatomy by dissection is a privilege which relies on the generosity of people who donate their bodies to the School of Medicine. It is important that you respect their generosity, maintain confidentiality and behave professionally at all times; handle all specimens with care and respect.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>As a result, delegates must not:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>take human tissue outside the licensed premises.<\/li>\n<li>remove medical histories of the donors from the DR, discuss these outside the School.<\/li>\n<li>bring any person into the DR unless approved by a Licensed Teacher.<\/li>\n<li>bring mobile phones into the DR.<\/li>\n<li>take photographs or any other form of electronic images in the DR or MMBARC.<\/li>\n<li>save or download the Anatomy practical videos created by the staff of School of Medicine or share them with anybody.<\/li>\n<li>access web content with prohibited or illegal material, in line with the University's Policy and Governance about computer use or access web content using DR infrastructure unsupervised.<\/li>\n<li>screen-capture or save any still images of the donors, either from videos of practicals or formative online anatomy practical examinations.<\/li>\n<li>wear hats or shorts in the DR.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<ol start=\"4\">\n<li><strong>Health and Safety.<\/strong> Embalmed cadavers present no known health hazard and the level of chemicals used in the embalming process is well within the limits set by health and safety regulations. All delegates must comply with the specific health and safety rules for the DR:\n<ul>\n<li>Delegates must wear a lab coat, safety glasses and use the gloves provided when in the DR. Lab coats used in the DR should not be worn beyond the anatomy corridor.<\/li>\n<li>Delegates should wear appropriate shoes in case instruments fall from the table.<\/li>\n<li>Splashes to the eye should be washed immediately with tap water.<\/li>\n<li>Any injuries should be reported to DR staff, washed immediately with soap and water and protected (plasters are available from the DR office). Delegates will be advised about and must follow the procedure for the correct use and disposal of blades (see <a rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/medicine.st-andrews.ac.uk\/short-courses\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/46\/2024\/12\/infrastructure_safety_sharps-policy.pdf\">Sharps Policy<\/a> document).<\/li>\n<li>Spillages of fluid should be reported to a member of staff.<\/li>\n<li><span data-olk-copy-source=\"MessageBody\">Delegates should not attempt to rotate the dissection tables, call a member of staff if a table requires turning.<\/span><\/li>\n<li>Delegates should leave the work area clean and tidy and ensure that all instruments are cleaned and safely packed away.<\/li>\n<li>Delegates must not bring food or drink (including chewing gum), bags or coats into the DR.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>At the end of each dissecting practical session, blades should be removed using the scalpel blade removal devices where single - use disposable devices are unavailable.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><strong>First 18 weeks of pregnancy. <\/strong>Any delegates within their first 18 weeks of pregnancy cannot enter the Dissecting Room. Under the Act, cadavers may be used by people with an interest and need to study human anatomy in premises that are licensed for that purpose. The premises covered by the Act are the Dissecting Room (DR), the Monroe Maximilian Broad Anatomy Resource Centre (MMBARC) and all anatomy preparation rooms.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<ol start=\"2\">\n<li>Under The Act, its Regulations, Code of Practice and local rules, staff and delegates are required to properly respect those people who have donated their bodies. Breaches to the Act make a person liable for University disciplinary procedures and, in addition, may be a criminal offence.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<ol start=\"3\">\n<li>Respect for Donated Human Material. The opportunity for Medical delegates to learn anatomy by dissection is a privilege which relies on the generosity of people who donate their bodies to the School of Medicine. It is important that you respect their generosity, maintain confidentiality and behave professionally at all times; handle all specimens with care and respect.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>As a result, delegates must not:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>take human tissue outside the licensed premises.<\/li>\n<li>remove medical histories of the donors from the DR, discuss these outside the School.<\/li>\n<li>bring any person into the DR unless approved by a Licensed Teacher.<\/li>\n<li>bring mobile phones into the DR.<\/li>\n<li>take photographs or any other form of electronic images in the DR or MMBARC.<\/li>\n<li>save or download the Anatomy practical videos created by the staff of School of Medicine or share them with anybody.<\/li>\n<li>access web content with prohibited or illegal material, in line with the University's Policy and Governance about computer use or access web content using DR infrastructure unsupervised.<\/li>\n<li>screen-capture or save any still images of the donors, either from videos of practicals or formative online anatomy practical examinations.<\/li>\n<li>wear hats or shorts in the DR.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<ol start=\"4\">\n<li><strong>Health and Safety.<\/strong> Embalmed cadavers present no known health hazard and the level of chemicals used in the embalming process is well within the limits set by health and safety regulations. All delegates must comply with the specific health and safety rules for the DR:\n<ul>\n<li>Delegates must wear a lab coat, safety glasses and use the gloves provided when in the DR. Lab coats used in the DR should not be worn beyond the anatomy corridor.<\/li>\n<li>Delegates should wear appropriate shoes in case instruments fall from the table.<\/li>\n<li>Splashes to the eye should be washed immediately with tap water.<\/li>\n<li>Any injuries should be reported to DR staff, washed immediately with soap and water and protected (plasters are available from the DR office). Delegates will be advised about and must follow the procedure for the correct use and disposal of blades (see <a rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/medicine.st-andrews.ac.uk\/short-courses\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/46\/2024\/12\/infrastructure_safety_sharps-policy.pdf\">Sharps Policy<\/a> document).<\/li>\n<li>Spillages of fluid should be reported to a member of staff.<\/li>\n<li><span data-olk-copy-source=\"MessageBody\">Delegates should not attempt to rotate the dissection tables, call a member of staff if a table requires turning.<\/span><\/li>\n<li>Delegates should leave the work area clean and tidy and ensure that all instruments are cleaned and safely packed away.<\/li>\n<li>Delegates must not bring food or drink (including chewing gum), bags or coats into the DR.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>At the end of each dissecting practical session, blades should be removed using the scalpel blade removal devices where single - use disposable devices are unavailable.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><strong>First 18 weeks of pregnancy. <\/strong>Any delegates within their first 18 weeks of pregnancy cannot enter the Dissecting Room.
