University of St Andrews

School of Medicine clinical & research careers project

  • Location of primary studies: University of Edinburgh and later Stirling, Cardiff and Harvard
  • First interested in research: 2-3 years after graduating at time applying for specialist training
  • Current specialisation: Public health medicine
  • Field of research: applied epidemiology eg initially on cardiac arrest outside of hospital and more recently violence reduction and early disease detection and chronic disease prevention
  • MD: part-time, took 4 years, Edinburgh
  • Work in other countries: Canada and also research based work with the WHO in eg Jamaica, South Africa, Lithuania. Serve on a board in the USA focussed on promoting evidence based and affordable healthcare
  • Current weekly rota: mostly academic, some NHS professional leadership
  • Advice: Take part in summer projects if possible in order to get a feel for research early and don’t rule out research as part of your career. The happiest clinical folk of my cohort seem to be the ones who do something else as well as front line practice
