School of Medicine clinical & research careers project

  • Location of study: University of St Andrews, University of Manchester
  • First interested in research: Dissertation in 3rd year and Student Selected Components in clinical years of medical school
  • Current specialisation: GP training finished September 2021, Research Fellowship at St Andrews with funding from NHS Education Scotland
  • Field of research: Global Health
  • PhD: none done yet, would do PhD by portfolio rather than thesis
  • Attitudes towards this type of job: Doctors are expected to take time out rather than manage research and clinical work together, good to have opportunity to do a fellowship that allows combined clinical and research commitments
  • Current week rota: 3 days research, 2 days GP
  • Advice: If you put in effort you can get a publication out of your dissertation! Ask your supervisor at the beginning if and how you can get this published. Make sure it is something you find really interesting as you will be reading about this for 12 weeks.
