  • Location of primary medical degree: University of St Andrews, University of Manchester
  • First interested in research: Through a summer project while at the University of St Andrews
  • Mentor: David Harrison who was very supportive and involved, gave advice on opportunities to take
  • Current specialisation: Completed a specialised foundation programme (FY1 and FY2) and worked as a clinical fellow in oncology for a year
  • Field of research: Primarily oncology
  • PhD: Will start a full-time PhD this upcoming year
  • Attitudes: It can be more or less challenging to integrate research into your clinical work depending on what NHS Trust you work in, but this type of job is very respected everywhere.
  • Current rota: Once he starts his PhD – will spend every Tuesday and one Wednesday a month at the clinic. Remaining time during the week will be spent in the lab, in meetings and courses needed to gain more expertise in the research field.
  • Advice: Get as much exposure to many different things early on (such as research), and learn something from each of these experiences. They can help guide you through your career choices!
