  • Location of primary medical degree: University of Edinburgh
  • First research experience: Medical elective in Zimbabwe and Cameroon with WHO worker involved in projects with contraception and HIV/AIDS
  • Current specialisation: Consultant ophthalmologist with interest in Paediatrics, Senior Lecturer at University of St Andrews with interest in Global Health
  • Field of research: Infection and Global Health, practical translational research convergent on improvements in clinical practice using low cost tools
  • Research Training: Took 2 years out as a Research Fellow at University of Edinburgh half-way through post-grad ophthalmology training
  • Work abroad: Paediatric Specialist training in Brisbane, Australia, worked as Paediatric Ophthalmologist in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, collaborate with NGOs in several African countries  such as CBM (Christian Blind Mission)
  • Attitudes towards this type of job: Fantastic opportunity to work amongst a diverse and highly talented team within a prestigious and forward thinking University. The UK’s number 1!!.
  • Current working year: 75% of the year in the UK with NHS + University with a 50/50 split, 25% of the year in different low resource countries delivering teaching and research projects with range of NGOs.
  • Advice: Only go into research if interested. Published papers are helpful in getting you a job in the NHS but being a team player is THE most important skill. Try to maintaining contacts with mentors from earlier in your career as they can offer great advice and contacts at a later stage.
