  • First interested in research: 5th year medical school, through Caritas organisation with project on ‘Substance Misuse’
  • Initial Mentor: GP he teamed up with
  • Current specialisation and positions related to research: Consultant Psychiatrist,  Founding member for the European Network for Training, Education and Research (ENTER)-Mental Health and President for the International Society of Addiction Medicine (ISAM)
  • Field of research: Addiction medicine – less lab based
  • PhD: in Medicine from the University of Dundee in 2012
  • Job opportunities with research throughout career: Cambridge (work alongside a professor), Edinburgh (with psychiatry)
  • Attitudes people have this type of job: “Extinct species” – assumption you don’t see patients, pressure to be either one or the other in current medical environment
  • Current week rota: 2 days research, 2 days clinical, 1 day research & development (now handed over)
  • Advice: Enjoy the process not just the output!
