School\u00a0of Medicine Lecturer\u00a0<\/span>Dr Joanne Cecil<\/span><\/a> will contribute her expertise to an \u00a3800,000 research project aimed at tackling career barriers faced by doctors with disabilities.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Led by the University of Aberdeen\u2019s Centre for Healthcare Education Research and Innovation (CHERI)<\/a> and\u00a0generously\u00a0funded by the National Institute for Health and Care Research (NIHR)<\/a>,\u00a0the study brings together\u00a0researchers from\u00a0St\u202fAndrews, Edinburgh Napier University, Queen\u2019s University Belfast, and the Disabled Doctors Network<\/a>.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Research conducted by the General Medical Council<\/span><\/a>\u00a0has\u00a0shown\u00a0that doctors with disabilities\u00a0remain\u00a0underrepresented in the NHS and often face discrimination, bullying, and limited career progression. This project will explore these challenges in depth and co-design practical solutions to create fairer, more inclusive\u00a0career\u00a0pathways for\u00a0physicians.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The\u00a0research\u00a0team\u00a0will\u00a0analyse\u00a0existing policies, conduct interviews and workplace observations, and work closely with stakeholders to develop evidence-based recommendations that support long-term career development.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cThis research is vital to understanding and addressing the systemic barriers that prevent doctors with disabilities from thriving in their careers,\u201d says Dr\u00a0Cecil.\u00a0\u201cBy working collaboratively, we can ensure the NHS benefits from the skills and perspectives of all its professionals.\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The findings will be shared with doctors, patients, employers, and regulators to drive meaningful change across the healthcare system.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
