Co-organised by lecturer <a href=\"https:\/\/www.st-andrews.ac.uk\/medicine\/people\/mkm27\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Dr Morag Mansley<\/a>, the conference drew 86 attendees from across the globe to St Andrews, raising the profile of the School and the University.<\/p>\n<p>Four sessions split across two days explored \u201cRecent Developments in Epithelial Transport Physiology,\u201d \u201cNew Insights into Structure and Function of Ion Channels and Transporters,\u201d \u201cThe Transport Physiologists\u2019 Toolbox in 2023\u201d and \u201cDysfunction of Ion Channels and Transporters in Disease.\u201d\u00a0 Speakers included both established and early-career scientists, including our own <a href=\"https:\/\/www.st-andrews.ac.uk\/medicine\/people\/sjp24\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Dr Samantha Pitt<\/a>, who presented on \u201cThe role of a newly identified Ca2+-permeable channel in cardiac dysfunction.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Day 1 ended with a poster session and networking reception, followed by a three-course \u201cTaste of Scotland\u201d dinner and a ceilidh band performance! Day 2 closed with an Awards Ceremony, at which postdoctoral research associate <a href=\"https:\/\/www.st-andrews.ac.uk\/medicine\/people\/ad300\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Dr Amy Dorward<\/a> was named winner of the Early Career Researcher Poster Competition, and a keynote lecture by Prof. Volker Vallon on \u201cThe kidneys\u2019 inner workings and needs: Lessons from inhibiting a glucose transporter.\u201d Prof. Vallon, Professor of Medicine and Pharmacology at the University of California &#8211; San Diego, is an award-winning pharmacologist, physiologist, and experimental investigator in the field of nephrology.<\/p>\n<p>The meeting organisers received excellent feedback, with several attendees asking \u201cWhen is the next one?\u201d!
