{"id":5589,"date":"2022-01-14T12:08:41","date_gmt":"2022-01-14T12:08:41","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/med.st-andrews.ac.uk\/medicine\/?p=5589"},"modified":"2022-01-14T12:08:41","modified_gmt":"2022-01-14T12:08:41","slug":"medical-science-building-earns-green-apple-award","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/medicine.st-andrews.ac.uk\/news\/medical-science-building-earns-green-apple-award\/","title":{"rendered":"Medical Science Building earns Green Apple Award"},"content":{"rendered":"<figure id=\"attachment_5590\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-5590\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-5590 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/medicine.st-andrews.ac.uk\/medicine\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/30\/2022\/01\/2021-04-21-School-Building-17-2000-1-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-5590\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Medical and Biological Sciences Building<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">An Estates initiative, delivered with Grundfos, to reduce emissions and save energy across the University has been <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/intheloop.newsweaver.com\/intheloop\/1oygbk65x9mt8wlvpape97?email=true&amp;lang=en&amp;a=2&amp;p=2241220&amp;t=18030\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">recognised<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"none\"> with a National Gold Green Apple Environment prize, in recognition of its hugely successful project at the Medical Science Building.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">School of Medicine Technician and Building Officer, Mike Fearon, who worked closely with Estates and helped reduce energy costs in the building by over \u00a310,000 a year, explained that the university has been a pilot for a variety of energy-saving initiatives as well as early detection of faults.\u00a0 Mike has been involved in these projects over the last few years and believes the initiatives will continue to produce awards over the next decade. <\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">Some of the award-winning sustainability initiatives include:<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li data-leveltext=\"\uf0b7\" data-font=\"Symbol\" data-listid=\"1\" data-aria-posinset=\"1\" data-aria-level=\"1\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">Non-Domestic Energy Efficiency (NDEE) programme, which includes LED lighting, replacing fan-driven motors to direct drive and the connection to the Biomass.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li data-leveltext=\"\uf0b7\" data-font=\"Symbol\" data-listid=\"1\" data-aria-posinset=\"2\" data-aria-level=\"1\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">Grundfos Machine Health Solution, detailed <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/intheloop.newsweaver.com\/intheloop\/1oygbk65x9mt8wlvpape97?email=true&amp;lang=en&amp;a=2&amp;p=2241220&amp;t=18030\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">here<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"none\">, which helps with the early detection of faults and energy monitoring.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li data-leveltext=\"\uf0b7\" data-font=\"Symbol\" data-listid=\"1\" data-aria-posinset=\"1\" data-aria-level=\"1\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">Coppertree project. This project included the collection of data from all heating, ventilation &amp; air conditioning (HVAC) systems as well as fume cupboard extracts.
