One such\u00a0initiative\u00a0that encourages\u00a0the development of cross-border conversations and networks is the\u00a0collaborative\u00a0research\u00a0grant between the University of St Andrews and the University of Bonn.\u00a0Piloting this year, the grant is designed to\u00a0establish global partnerships.\u00a0One of\u00a0two\u00a0recipients\u00a0of the\u00a02021\u00a0Collaborative Research Grant is a\u00a0study led by Dr\u00a0Silvia\u00a0Paracchini\u00a0(School of Medicine, University of St Andrews) and Professor Markus M.\u00a0N\u00f6then\u00a0(<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.genetik.uni-bonn.de\/\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">Institute of Human Genetics<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">,\u00a0School of Medicine, University of Bonn).<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The\u00a0study\u00a0aims to\u00a0apply\u00a0machine learning\u00a0methods\u00a0to\u00a0the interpretation of large-scale\u00a0genomic\u00a0data in the context of psychiatric disorders.\u00a0Machine learning will be used to model both clinical and genomic data. The goals are to identify better ways to categorise patients and to assess the contribution of multiple genetic factors,\u00a0as opposed to current methods focusing on individual markers. The project builds on\u00a0the established research interests and\u00a0expertise\u00a0of researchers in St Andrews and Bonn, particularly\u00a0in machine learning, genomics,\u00a0and psychiatry.\u00a0\u00a0Within St Andrews, collaborators in this study are spread across the School of Medicine, the School of Computer Science and the School of Maths and Statistics.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The study also joins forces with\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/research.eu.medical.canon\/\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">Canon Medical Research\u00a0Europe<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, experts in big data and machine learning.\u00a0They are\u00a0established\u00a0world leaders\u00a0in the analysis of imaging data using\u00a0artificial intelligence.\u00a0 Their expertise will be particularly\u00a0relevant\u00a0for\u00a0the integration of brain imaging data, pertinent\u00a0in this\u00a0project.\u00a0The study draws on the\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ukbiobank.ac.uk\/\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">UK Biobank<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, an important source of data for this study,\u00a0and the grant\u00a0will\u00a0fund part of the access fees and computer requirements\u00a0for\u00a0this\u00a0analysis. The project is very\u00a0ambitious\u00a0and it is not realistic to achieve the final goal in the next two years.
