{"id":5441,"date":"2021-08-04T09:47:33","date_gmt":"2021-08-04T08:47:33","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/med.st-andrews.ac.uk\/medicine\/?p=5441"},"modified":"2021-08-04T09:47:33","modified_gmt":"2021-08-04T08:47:33","slug":"promotion-to-senior-lecturer","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/medicine.st-andrews.ac.uk\/news\/promotion-to-senior-lecturer\/","title":{"rendered":"Promotion to Senior Lecturer"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The School of Medicine would like to congratulate Veronica O\u2019Carroll on her promotion to Senior Lecturer at the University of St. Andrews.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_5442\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-5442\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-5442\" src=\"https:\/\/medicine.st-andrews.ac.uk\/medicine\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/30\/2021\/08\/Veronica-OCarroll-300x225.jpeg\" alt=\"Dr Veronica O'Carroll\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-5442\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Dr Veronica O&#8217;Carroll<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Veronica, who is currently the Director of Postgraduate Teaching (PGT) at the School, says that she is grateful for the support, encouragement, and mentorship that she has received from colleagues and is excited for this next chapter.\u00a0 Veronica is a qualified nurse and has wide-ranging experiences and research interests across healthcare and academia.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Veronica began her journey within academic teaching at the University of St. Andrews in 2007,\u00a0\u00a0teaching clinical skills and then as Clinical Lecturer in Interprofessional Education.\u00a0 After a stint as a Lecturer at the School of Nursing, University of Dundee, Veronica returned to St. Andrews in 2017, where she continued to develop her clinical teaching experience.\u00a0 This same year, Veronica completed her PhD from the School of Psychology and Neuroscience at the university, under the supervision of Dr Martin Campbell, investigating health and social care professionals\u2019 attitudes and perceptions of interprofessional practice and learning.\u00a0\u00a0 <\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">In\u00a0her\u00a0role as\u00a0Director of Postgraduate Teaching,\u00a0Veronica is\u00a0responsible\u00a0for leading the development of strategy and policy for learning, teaching,\u00a0and assessment of taught postgraduate courses\u00a0at\u00a0the School of Medicine.\u00a0\u00a0Since taking on this role in July 2020,\u00a0she\u00a0has\u00a0been able to gain a better understanding of our current PGT courses within the\u00a0School\u00a0and the relevant University processes that are required for the smooth running of a course at masters level.\u00a0 Working with the MSc Health Psychology programme team this past academic year has enabled\u00a0her\u00a0to understand the needs of our postgraduate community of students and appreciate that this programme has built important foundations for the future development of PGT.\u00a0\u00a0She has\u00a0also been able to gain insight into the first very successful year of the MSc in Digital Health, co- directed by Silvia\u00a0Parracchini, School of Medicine, David Harris-Birtill, School of Computer Science,\u00a0and\u00a0administered\u00a0by the Graduate School.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Veronica maintains that she has always felt very supported in her professional development within the School.\u00a0 As well as fulfilling her teaching role, she has been able to retain her registration as a nurse with the Nursing and Midwifery Council and has pursued her research interest in interprofessional education, collaborative practice, and telehealth.\u00a0\u00a0Over the next academic year, Veronica is excited to explore new opportunities to develop part-time, online MSc programmes and micro-accredited short courses.\u00a0 She states that through current health service partnerships, the Mackenzie Institute for Early Diagnosis, and the award-winning Learning Technology team, there are fantastic opportunities to harness current expertise and build on existing postgraduate teaching.\u00a0 As demands on the Health Service increase, it is important to consider how we can support continuing professional development of healthcare workers, educators, and researchers.\u00a0\u00a0The last 18 months have shown what excellent quality online teaching and learning looks like and proves that bringing \u2018the St Andrews experience\u201d to online learners is still possible.
