The School of Medicine has retained its position as\u00a0second place\u00a0of UK Medical Schools in the National Student Survey\u00a0(NSS).\u00a0<\/span> The NSS\u00a0gauges students\u2019 experiences of learning and teaching at university.\u00a0The same survey\u00a0placed\u00a0St Andrews\u00a0as\u00a0the UK\u2019s top mainstream university\u00a0for\u00a0the thirteenth time in the past 15 years.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

This year, the NSS asked students a new set of questions\u00a0about specific aspects of their experience\u00a0during the pandemic.\u00a0The School of Medicine scored\u00a095.8% for student satisfaction. Prof Crossman,\u00a0Head of School and\u00a0Dean of Medicine\u00a0said,\u00a0\u201cThis is a tremendous result in any time, but in the context of the disruption to education caused by the COVID-19 pandemic this is a result that reflects the quality of the staff and culture at the\u00a0School. The result is a testament to the huge commitment\u00a0of our staff and the rapport they have with our talented students.\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

During the last year, all lectures\u00a0in Medicine\u00a0were delivered online\u00a0however students were able to continue\u00a0a significant number of\u00a0practical sessions in person albeit with\u00a0social distancing restrictions\u00a0and appropriate PPE where required.\u00a0\u00a0Director of Teaching, Dr Alun Hughes added: \u201cThis fantastic result wouldn\u2019t have been possible without the engagement of all staff and students who create a collegiate and supportive environment regardless of the challenges faced over the last couple of years. Whilst we benefit as a\u00a0School who have always embraced technology in teaching, it\u2019s great to see the quality of the staff that enable and deliver it recognised in these results.\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Anna Apara, School President,\u00a0who is entering the final year of her BSc\u00a0stated: \u201cThe last academic year has been extremely different from previous years.\u00a0As we continue to transition from what has been an unprecedented change within our global community, I believe that the position the\u00a0School\u00a0has made within the national Student Survey is a testament to the dynamic\u00a0measures\u00a0that staff have taken on, notably with continual areas for student feedback and change.\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The NSS is managed by the Office for\u00a0Students\u00a0on behalf of the UK funding and regulatory bodies – the Department for the Economy (Northern Ireland), The Scottish Funding Council and the Higher Education Funding Council for Wales.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
