{"id":5379,"date":"2021-06-28T08:00:46","date_gmt":"2021-06-28T07:00:46","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/med.st-andrews.ac.uk\/medicine\/?p=5379"},"modified":"2023-04-03T15:09:13","modified_gmt":"2023-04-03T14:09:13","slug":"workplace-training-completed","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/medicine.st-andrews.ac.uk\/news\/workplace-training-completed\/","title":{"rendered":"Workplace training completed"},"content":{"rendered":"<figure id=\"attachment_5384\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-5384\" style=\"width: 700px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-5384\" src=\"https:\/\/medicine.st-andrews.ac.uk\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/30\/2021\/06\/2021-06-02-Staff-Success-1-1024.jpg\" alt=\"Mike and Rachel pictured outside MBSB\" width=\"700\" height=\"467\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-5384\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Mike and Rachel pictured outside the School of Medicine<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The School of Medicine would like to congratulate Rachel Horn and Mike Fearon for completing work-based qualifications at the University of St. Andrews.\u00a0 Both training routes saw Rachel and Mike undertake a variety of tasks across a number of teams within the school.\u00a0 Rachel\u2019s apprenticeship was organised through QA and combined on-the-job training with online learning.\u00a0 After realising that Sport Studies was not for her and dropping out of University, Rachel began searching for an apprenticeship.\u00a0 From the outset, the School of Medicine seemed like a good fit. \u00a0Rachel describes work experience obtained at the School of Medicine as very diverse.\u00a0 She enjoyed a number of rotations across the professional services teams within the school including the teaching team and the admissions team.\u00a0 She says that it was a completely new work environment for her, given that her previous job was as a lifeguard, and she had never had a desk job before.\u00a0 The experience and support she received during the apprenticeship helped to build her confidence and administrative skills.\u00a0 Rachel was awarded an SVQ 3 in Business and Administration &#8211; Digital Applications Support, SCQF Level 6.\u00a0 She is thankful for the encouragement received during her training, particularly from Helen Clark, Operations and Facilities Manager.\u00a0 Rachel is currently the Postgraduate Secretary for the School and is hoping to continue her career in higher education.<\/p>\n<p>Mike Fearon has had an interesting journey at the University of St. Andrews, since becoming a staff member in 2010.\u00a0 Earlier that year, he was made redundant from his job as a joiner, amidst the global recession, and was looking for new career opportunities. \u00a0Mike originally began working as a part-time cleaner for Estates at the university, before transferring to the School of Medicine one year later as a full-time technical cleaner.\u00a0 Mike was eager to learn and committed to career development.\u00a0 In 2016, he was encouraged by Clive Masson, Manager at the School of Medicine, to undertake a work-based qualification.\u00a0 This training, run through Dundee &amp;
