Researchers at Aberdeen, St. Andrews, Dundee<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">, Glasgow, Edinburgh<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\"> and <\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">NES<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\"> wanted to understand how doctors were <\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">experiencing the transitions associated <\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">with<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\"> COVID-19 and beyond<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">, and what interventions would best support doctors<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u2019<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\"> wellbeing and resilience during the pandemic and towards future practice<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u202f<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;134233117&quot;:true,&quot;134233118&quot;:true}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;134233117&quot;:true,&quot;134233118&quot;:true}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">Funded by the Chief Scientists\u2019 Office in Scotland, this was a Scotland-wide rapid research project on doctors\u2019 wellbeing. This type of research meant that the pace was fast, but effective \u2013 with the entirety of the project being only six months from start to finish. The research included interviews and longitudinal audio diaries from <\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">around <\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">100 doctors across Scotland during the first wave of COVID-19.\u202f<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;134233117&quot;:true,&quot;134233118&quot;:true}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;134233117&quot;:true,&quot;134233118&quot;:true}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">Dr Anita Laidlaw and Dr Joanne Cecil, lecturers at St. Andrews, who each have an interest in health communication and wellbeing of medical students and doctors were involved in this project. Because of the fast pace of the research, all stages of the project were worked on in parallel with each other, which meant that scoping review, data collection, analysis<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">, intervention development<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\"> and evaluation were <\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">conducted<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\"> simultaneously. Dr<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">s<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\"> Laidlaw and Cecil noted that the fast pace of the research \u201callowed for the team to quickly identify what should be focused on, which allowed for a narrower research focus.\u201d\u202f<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;134233117&quot;:true,&quot;134233118&quot;:true}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;134233117&quot;:true,&quot;134233118&quot;:true}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">After analysis<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\"> of the interview and diary data<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">, the team worked to develop interventions that would enhance access to formal and informal forms of <\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">psychological <\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">support. One of these interventions was <\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u201c<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">How Was Your Day?<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u201d<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\"> \u2013 a new component of <\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">the <\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">employment engagement and wellbeing<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\"> app called \u2018<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">Trickle<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u2019<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\"> which gives real-time data on the wellbeing of Scotland\u2019s <\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">NHS <\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">workforce and <\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">allows health care staff to provide feedback to the organisation.<\/span> <span data-contrast=\"none\">The <\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u201c<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">How was Your Day<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u201d <\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">component of the app <\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">provides insight into factors that contribute to good days, such as days where people feel respected and connected to colleagues and <\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">takes a proactive approach to supporting and valuing staff<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">. <\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">Since introducing this app into the NHS, poor hydration <\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">has been <\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">highlighted as a contributor to bad days.\u202f<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;134233117&quot;:true,&quot;134233118&quot;:true}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;134233117&quot;:true,&quot;134233118&quot;:true}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">This project, despite the fast pace of research, has yielded very important results. <\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">The findings <\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">clearly <\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">showed that the COVID-19 pandemic has magnified already existing challenges to doctors working practices.\u00a0 <\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">As Dr Laidlaw cited, \u201cthe project really allowed us to identify barriers in the workplace and helped to make it more acceptable for doctors to seek help when they need it.\u201d The research identified that doctors were experiencing a lack of being valued and increased stigma around seeking psychological support \u2013 which was only made more prominent during COVID-19.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;134233117&quot;:true,&quot;134233118&quot;:true}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;134233117&quot;:true,&quot;134233118&quot;:true}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">Although the project identified certain barriers to accessing support both formally and informally, it also revealed positive <\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">experiences <\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">including the importance of teamwork and collaboration<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\"> within and across specialities<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">.
