The study <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">focused on <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">developmental language disorder, diagnosed when children show unexpected <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">problems<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> with<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> expressing and understanding spoken language. This is a common condition, with studies suggesting that at least 5% of children experience<\/span> <span data-contrast=\"auto\">difficulties, <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">often co-<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">occurring<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> with other neurodevelopmental disorders such as dyslexia and ADHD.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:240,&quot;469777462&quot;:[9638],&quot;469777927&quot;:[0],&quot;469777928&quot;:[4]}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:240,&quot;469777462&quot;:[9638],&quot;469777927&quot;:[0],&quot;469777928&quot;:[4]}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> study identified <\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">a rare non-synonymous variant in <\/span><i><span data-contrast=\"none\">ATP2C2<\/span><\/i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, a gene<\/span> <span data-contrast=\"auto\">that <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">was <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">previously implicated in<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> language disorders<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">. <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Th<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">e variant<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> was discovered <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">as a result of<\/span> <span data-contrast=\"auto\">ongoing exome sequencing stud<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">ies,<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> conducted <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">as part of an international collaboration of researchers.<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> Angela <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">followed up on<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> this finding by genotyping<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> the variant<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> in <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">large cohorts of individuals diagnosed with <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">language-related<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> disorders<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">. The study unc<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">overed<\/span> <span data-contrast=\"auto\">that t<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">he <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">variant<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> increase<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">d<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> the risk for <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">language impairment<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> in clinical samples<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">. Angela <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">demonstrated massive commitment to this<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> project, <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">particularly in the context of the challenges that COVID-19 and lockdown presented. <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Th<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">e study<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> highlights how complex the genetics of language disorders is and <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">that<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> cross-disciplinary and international collaborations are necessary to advance the field.
