{"id":5101,"date":"2018-02-07T11:28:51","date_gmt":"2018-02-07T11:28:51","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/med.st-andrews.ac.uk\/medicine\/?p=5101"},"modified":"2018-02-07T11:28:51","modified_gmt":"2018-02-07T11:28:51","slug":"reduction-in-neonatal-mortality-in-10-hospitals","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/medicine.st-andrews.ac.uk\/news\/reduction-in-neonatal-mortality-in-10-hospitals\/","title":{"rendered":"Reduction in neonatal mortality in 10 hospitals"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Paediatric and Child Health Association (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.pacha.org.mw\">PACHA<\/a>) of Malawi\u00a0started in 2015 to work with district\u00a0hospitals to identify rooms and staff\u00a0specifically dedicated for sick newborns, renovating the new units\u00a0and equipping them\u00a0with key equipment. A training package &#8211;\u00a0<strong>Care of the Infant and Newborn<\/strong> (<a href=\"https:\/\/research-repository.st-andrews.ac.uk\/bitstream\/handle\/10023\/11783\/COIN.2017_participants_manual.pdf?sequence=1&amp;isAllowed=y\">COIN<\/a>) for capacity building of mid-level\u00a0health workers (nurses and clinical officers) in the care of sick\u00a0babies was developed along with neonatal admission forms\u00a0and other supporting tools (adapted from real time monitoring\u00a0tools courtesy UNICEF India).<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-5103\" src=\"http:\/\/med.st-andrews.ac.uk\/medicine\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/28\/2018\/02\/admin-ajax.php-230x300.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"230\" height=\"300\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Training was provided to 350\u00a0health workers. In addition, 43 pre-service lecturers from all\u00a0but two health training institutions have been trained, nurse\u00a0and midwife curriculum reviews facilitated, and mentoring and\u00a0supervision provided. Working with the Central Monitoring\u00a0and Evaluation Department (CMED) at MOH, a newborn care\u00a0register was developed, printed, tested and initially used in\u00a0these 10 hospitals.
