{"id":4898,"date":"2019-06-05T09:11:59","date_gmt":"2019-06-05T08:11:59","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/med.st-andrews.ac.uk\/medicine\/?p=4898"},"modified":"2019-06-05T09:11:59","modified_gmt":"2019-06-05T08:11:59","slug":"scotgem-community-engaged-medical-education-event","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/medicine.st-andrews.ac.uk\/news\/scotgem-community-engaged-medical-education-event\/","title":{"rendered":"ScotGEM Community-Engaged Medical Education Event"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-4899 aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/med.st-andrews.ac.uk\/medicine\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/28\/2019\/09\/AoC-300x159-300x159.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"159\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Medicine\u00a0welcomed approximately 70 delegates to celebrate\u00a0the partnership between the ScotGEM (Scottish Graduate Entry Medicine) programme and the third sector.<\/p>\n<p>During their first semester of year 1, the ScotGEM students spend approximately 20 hours with a third sector organisation, learning\u00a0about the valuable services they offer their communities.<\/p>\n<p>The students were hosted in organisations who offered experiences in a diverse range of services; this had a profound effect on the students&#8217; understanding of the wider social determinants of health. The event enabled us to show our thanks for the enormous contribution that the third sector organisations have made to the ScotGEM programme, and our appreciation of\u00a0their continued engagement.<\/p>\n<p>We were privileged to welcome renowned external speakers\u00a0John Loughton and\u00a0Pat Armstrong OBE\u00a0and were both informed and inspired by their lectures.<\/p>\n<p>April Adam, Service Manager at FIRST (Fife Intensive Rehabilitation and Substance Misuse Team) delivered a thoroughly enjoyable organisational perspective describing their participation in the programme and\u00a0ScotGEM student\u00a0Dominic Pascoe\u00a0gave an engaging\u00a0talk about his experience at DAPL (Drug &amp; Alcohol Project Limited).<\/p>\n<p>There was\u00a0an impressive\u00a0selection of posters on display which were submitted by the students, showing the range of issues that were explored\u00a0during\u00a0their voluntary sector placements.<\/p>\n<p>Thank you to everyone who attended and helped to make\u00a0this such a memorable and successful morning.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Medicine\u00a0welcomed approximately 70 delegates to celebrate\u00a0the partnership between the ScotGEM (Scottish Graduate Entry Medicine) programme and the third sector.
