{"id":4459,"date":"2018-06-25T12:51:04","date_gmt":"2018-06-25T11:51:04","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/medicine.st-andrews.ac.uk\/?p=4459"},"modified":"2018-06-25T12:51:04","modified_gmt":"2018-06-25T11:51:04","slug":"mbla-conference-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/medicine.st-andrews.ac.uk\/news\/mbla-conference-2\/","title":{"rendered":"MBLA Conference"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>With support from the Global Challenges Research Fund (GCRF) and Scottish funding council (SFC), the first ever Molecular bacterial load assay (MBLA) stakeholders conference was held at the University of St Andrews, 11<sup>th<\/sup> \u2013 13<sup>th<\/sup> June 2018.\u00a0 Directors of national TB control programmes, laboratory scientists, academics and industrialists representing 16 countries participated in the conference and WHO representatives.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-4436\" src=\"http:\/\/med.st-andrews.ac.uk\/medicine\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/28\/2018\/06\/MBLA-Sabiiti-Gillespie-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-4460 alignright\" src=\"http:\/\/med.st-andrews.ac.uk\/medicine\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/28\/2018\/06\/11_STAndrews_TB_Conf_AR-K1024-300x198.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"198\" \/><\/p>\n<p>17 delegates participated in the 2-day MBLA training session including Dr Christopher Gilpin, senior scientist at the Laboratories, Diagnostics and Drug resistance Unit (LDR) of the Global TB programme represented WHO.\u00a0 North East Fife MP, Hon. Stephen Gethins opened the training session on Monday 11<sup>th<\/sup> June and the Principal of the University of St Andrews, Prof Sally Mapston opened the conference plenary session on Wednesday 13<sup>th<\/sup> June.\u00a0 MBLA is a novel test that measures the number of tuberculosis (TB) bacteria in patient sample in a matter of hours and monitors the effectiveness of medicine in killing the bacteria as the patient progresses on treatment.\u00a0 The conference discussed ways by which the MBLA test can be translated into routine clinical practice and be accessed by TB patients who need it the most<em>.\u00a0 <\/em>In addition to the current evidence, the conference recommended a large scale multi-site \u2013 multi-national near routine practice evaluation of MBLA to conclusively answer technical and operational questions required by WHO to approve the test for routine practice.<\/p>\n<p>We acknowledge financial support from GCRF and SCF through the University St Andrews Research policy office, PanACEA consortium and School of Medicine, and EDCTP that has substantially funded the development of MBLA test.
