The Scottish Government yesterday announced that they will fully fund an additional 15 places on the course, starting with the 2018 intake, increasing student numbers from 40 to 55.
\nStudents on the ScotGEM course will be offered a \u201creturn of service\u201d bursary, a grant worth up to \u00a316,000, in exchange for working in NHS Scotland for up to four years.
\nIn announcing the places, Health Secretary Shona Robison said:
\n\u201cEarlier this month, I announced \u00a37.5 million funding for 2018-19 to recruit and retain GPs, particularly in remote areas, as part of a package of support that will ensure the long term sustainability of general practice.\u201d
\n \u201cThe additional places are another step towards the Scottish Government\u2019s aim of increasing the number of GPs in Scotland by at least 800 over the next decade.\u201d
