{"id":3124,"date":"2016-11-09T09:52:04","date_gmt":"2016-11-09T09:52:04","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/medicine.st-andrews.ac.uk\/?p=3124"},"modified":"2016-11-09T09:52:04","modified_gmt":"2016-11-09T09:52:04","slug":"presentations-at-the-international-agency-for-the-prevention-of-blindness","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/medicine.st-andrews.ac.uk\/news\/presentations-at-the-international-agency-for-the-prevention-of-blindness\/","title":{"rendered":"Presentations at the International Agency for the Prevention of Blindness"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-3126 aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/med.st-andrews.ac.uk\/medicine\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/28\/2016\/11\/AB-ST-and-SW-K1024-300x169.jpg\" alt=\"ab-st-and-sw-k1024\" width=\"300\" height=\"169\" \/>Sam Watson and Sahib Tuteja, along with their supervisor Dr Andrew Blaikie from the Global Health Implementation team recently presented their 3rd year\u00a0dissertations at the International Agency for the Prevention of Blindness (IAPB) 10th General Assembly in\u00a0Durban, South Africa.\u00a0 The IAPB together with the World Health Organisation (WHO), set up the VISION 2020\u00a0initiative which aims to eliminate avoidable blindness by 2020.<\/p>\n<p>Sam gave an oral presentation on his evaluation of the \u2018epiCam\u2019 a\u00a0novel\u00a0low-cost\u00a0hand held retinal camera developed by Craig Robertson\u2019s team at Epipole Ltd, Rosyth, Fife.<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-3129 alignright\" src=\"http:\/\/med.st-andrews.ac.uk\/medicine\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/28\/2016\/11\/AB-WJW-K1024-300x169.jpg\" alt=\"ab-wjw-k1024\" width=\"300\" height=\"169\" \/>\u00a0 Sahib presented a poster on the evaluation of the Arclight \u2018pocket\u2019 ophthalmoscope, a low-cost alternative to\u00a0conventional direct devices developed by William J Williams from Arclight Medical. \u00a0Dr Blaikie and Mr Williams then delivered an interactive presentation from the &#8216;Knowledge Pavilion\u2019 stage summarising the advantages of the Arclight device and its role in blindness prevention. \u00a0Both the epiCam and the Arclight will potentially allow eye care screening programmes to be developed in low resource countries\u00a0to prevent blindness.<\/p>\n<p>Arclight website:\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/arclightscope.com\">http:\/\/arclightscope.com<\/a><\/p>\n<p>[symple_button url=&#8221;https:\/\/www.standrewsuniversitystore.com\/health\/ophthalmoscope\/otoscope\/ophthalmoscope-loupe-otoscope-black&#8221;
