{"id":3047,"date":"2016-10-11T10:16:53","date_gmt":"2016-10-11T09:16:53","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/medicine.st-andrews.ac.uk\/?p=3047"},"modified":"2016-10-11T10:16:53","modified_gmt":"2016-10-11T09:16:53","slug":"dorothy-miller-bursary-awards-event","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/medicine.st-andrews.ac.uk\/news\/dorothy-miller-bursary-awards-event\/","title":{"rendered":"Dorothy Miller Bursary Awards Event"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Student recipients of the 2016 Dorothy Miller Bursary Awards presented their experiences of voluntary work in Malawi to an audience of University staff and students.\u00a0 The evening was an opportunity for the students to showcase their experience and inspire other students to apply for the award in 2017.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Lottie, Cam and Elliot volunteered in health centres, children centres, community based health projects and to work with youngsters with HIV.\u00a0 Jen and Barrie worked on a research project in both rural and urban Malawi which is looking to set up a self-sustaining service for patients with presbyopia.\u00a0 The enthusiasm and commitment of these students to their project was evident and they inspired the audience with their presentations.<\/p>\n<p>Nicola, the president of the University\u2019s \u2018Action for Muona\u2019 introduced us to another way St Andrews Students contribute to Malawi through the Muona Foundation.\u00a0 A simple thing like installing electricity into classrooms increases student grades.<\/p>\n<p>Finally Kathryn Chipperfield, Member services officer from the Scotland Malawi partnership showed the students how they might form a student Malawi society with wider networking and collaborating opportunities.<\/p>\n<p>Applications for next year\u2019s bursaries are being sought from second year St Andrews Medical students.
