{"id":3019,"date":"2016-10-04T16:00:41","date_gmt":"2016-10-04T15:00:41","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/medicine.st-andrews.ac.uk\/?p=3019"},"modified":"2016-10-04T16:00:41","modified_gmt":"2016-10-04T15:00:41","slug":"explorathon-2016-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/medicine.st-andrews.ac.uk\/news\/explorathon-2016-2\/","title":{"rendered":"Explorathon 2016"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>On the 30<sup>th<\/sup> of September Henry Rae, Mike Fearon and Paul Reynolds joined with researchers at the Byre Theatre from 5pm to 11.30pm delivering an interactive science event at Explorathon 2016.\u00a0 They were kept busy all night demonstrating proprioception and the decrease in reaction time when focussing on multiple tasks.\u00a0 The event was well-attended throughout the night with over 500 people of all ages including a St Andrews Medical graduate from 1946 who still has fond memories of her Bute years.<\/p>\n<p>At Craigtoun Park on Saturday 1<sup>st<\/sup> October 2016, Rachel Nutt was there as part of a team who created an interactive display where those attending the event could \u201chave a go\u201d at qualitative data analysis &#8211; by choosing themes to allocate to statements describing patients experiences of cardiac rehabilitation. \u00a0This was to give Explorathon attendees insight in to the research process but also the experiences of those who\u2019d had a heart attack and cardiac rehabilitation.\u00a0 Although there were a limited number of themes available to choose from, there was still discussion (and disagreement!) over which were \u201cright\u201d, with some people choosing to add their own themes.\u00a0 This was a great result as the third aim of the activity was to hopefully show, and prompt reflection on, how the interpretation of data can be influenced by your own background or bias.\u00a0 The Wellcome Trusts Institutional Strategic Support Fund, Public Engagement Bursary Scheme, provided funding for materials.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-3020 aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/med.st-andrews.ac.uk\/medicine\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/28\/2016\/10\/Banner-300x157.jpg\" alt=\"banner\" width=\"300\" height=\"157\" \/><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>On Friday 30th September Henry Rae, Mike Fearon and Paul Reynolds joined with researchers at the Byre Theatre from 5pm to 11.30pm and on Saturday 1st October, Rachel Nutt was part of a team at Craigtoun Park as they all delivered interactive science events as part of Explorathon 2016.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":39,"featured_media":3020,"comment_status":"closed","ping_status":"closed","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"_monsterinsights_skip_tracking":false,"_monsterinsights_sitenote_active":false,"_monsterinsights_sitenote_note":"","_monsterinsights_sitenote_category":0,"footnotes":""},"categories":[10,1],"tags":[181,568,738,857,941,947,1116],"class_list":["post-3019","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-news","category-uncategorised","tag-cardiac-rehabilitation","tag-henry-rae","tag-mike-fearon","tag-paul-reynolds","tag-public-engagement","tag-rachel-nutt","tag-the-wellcome-trust"],"publishpress_future_action":{"enabled":false,"date":"2026-04-16 15:11:00","action":"change-status","newStatus":"draft","terms":[],"taxonomy":"category","extraData":[]},"publishpress_future_workflow_manual_trigger":{"enabledWorkflows":[]},"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/medicine.st-andrews.ac.uk\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/3019","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/medicine.st-andrews.ac.uk\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/medicine.st-andrews.ac.uk\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/medicine.st-andrews.ac.uk\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/39"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/medicine.st-andrews.ac.uk\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=3019"}],"version-history":[{"count":0,"href":"https:\/\/medicine.st-andrews.ac.uk\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/3019\/revisions"}],"wp:featuredmedia":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/medicine.st-andrews.ac.uk\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media\/3020"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/medicine.st-andrews.ac.uk\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=3019"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/medicine.st-andrews.ac.uk\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=3019"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/medicine.st-andrews.ac.uk\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=3019"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
