{"id":2816,"date":"2016-07-20T18:41:35","date_gmt":"2016-07-20T17:41:35","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/medicine.st-andrews.ac.uk\/?p=2816"},"modified":"2016-07-20T18:41:35","modified_gmt":"2016-07-20T17:41:35","slug":"presentation-to-the-acid-fast-club-vincent-baron","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/medicine.st-andrews.ac.uk\/news\/presentation-to-the-acid-fast-club-vincent-baron\/","title":{"rendered":"Acid-Fast Club presentation"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-2817 aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/med.st-andrews.ac.uk\/medicine\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/28\/2016\/07\/vincent-300x226.jpg\" alt=\"vincent\" width=\"300\" height=\"226\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Vincent Baron (School of Medicine) a PhD student in the Gillespie group presented his exciting research project at the Acid-Fast Club hosted by Public Health England in Porton Down (7 and 8 of July 2016).<\/p>\n<p>The Acid Fast Club is a national group of researchers interested in all aspects of\u00a0 mycobacterial diseases \u2013 the acid fast bacilli.<\/p>\n<p>His talk, \u201cPhenotypic discrimination of <em>M. tuberculosis<\/em> single cell in infected lung tissue by Raman spectroscopy\u201d reports, for the first time, a method that can determine the metabolic cell state of <em>M tuberculosis. <\/em>\u00a0It achieves this by examining the lipid content of individual cells in TB infected tissue using Raman Spectroscopy.\u00a0 This is an important development because it is label-free and does not destroy the sample \u2013 so it is available for other tests.<\/p>\n<p>This innovation was made possible through a close collaboration with Kishan Dholakia\u2019s group in Physics a good example of inter school working.<\/p>\n<p>An important result that emerges from the development is that, in tissues, the lipid rich phenotype dominates.
