Workshop on quality of care at Mangochi District Hospital
Professor William Stones joined Ministry of Health, WHO and UNICEF colleagues for a workshop on quality of care at Mangochi District Hospital last week. The hospital is one of the busiest in the country and serves a rural community of around one million surrounding Lake Malawi. The hospital hosts Malawi College of Medicine medical student rotations and Clinical Officer BSc trainees in obstetrics and is a site for nursing and midwifery student placements. The District is working to improve the care provided in maternal, newborn and child health services. Following a review of data about the numbers of patients accessing services, the facilities and equipment on site and staffing levels, visits to clinical areas in the hospital were carried out including interviews with patients and staff. Next steps include formulation of an action plan for quality improvement by the District Health Management Team in the run up to the commissioning of a newly constructed maternity unit.
