Presentations at the International Agency for the Prevention of Blindness
Sam Watson and Sahib Tuteja, along with their supervisor Dr Andrew Blaikie from the Global Health Implementation team recently presented their 3rd year dissertations at the International Agency for the Prevention of Blindness (IAPB) 10th General Assembly in Durban, South Africa. The IAPB together with the World Health Organisation (WHO), set up the VISION 2020 initiative which aims to eliminate avoidable blindness by 2020.
Sam gave an oral presentation on his evaluation of the ‘epiCam’ a novel low-cost hand held retinal camera developed by Craig Robertson’s team at Epipole Ltd, Rosyth, Fife. Sahib presented a poster on the evaluation of the Arclight ‘pocket’ ophthalmoscope, a low-cost alternative to conventional direct devices developed by William J Williams from Arclight Medical. Dr Blaikie and Mr Williams then delivered an interactive presentation from the ‘Knowledge Pavilion’ stage summarising the advantages of the Arclight device and its role in blindness prevention. Both the epiCam and the Arclight will potentially allow eye care screening programmes to be developed in low resource countries to prevent blindness.
