Global Early Adolescent Study
Researchers from Malawi College of Medicine and the University of St Andrews met in Lilongwe to discuss and share the initial findings of the ‘Global Early Adolescent Study’ (www.geastudy.org) with the Ministry of Health and development partners. Prof Bob Blum of Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health, the global study principal investigator updated us on findings from the 15 country sites and Prof William Stones together with project co-ordinator Trinitas Mhango presented the experience gained from working with young adolescents in two Blantyre schools. The group is now working to develop the next phase in partnership with UNICEF that will test an intervention to enhance the wellbeing of boys and girls and reduce vulnerability to social and health problems. The following day the group visited the participating schools in Blantyre for discussions with the heads and teachers and concluded with a briefing on next phase planning with the District Education Manager and her team.
