Four Decades of Public Health Excellence Recognised with Alwyn Smith Prize

We are delighted to share that this year the top prize of the UK Faculty of Public Health has been won by our own Prof Peter Donnelly, awarded “in recognition of outstanding contribution through research that has directly informed population level outcomes over almost four decades“.

Peter’s work on resuscitation and violence reduction was specifically cited as was his policy work on tobacco control and alcohol minimum pricing. However, Peter tells us he was most pleased with the reference to being a mentor to a generation of Public Health Professionals. His view is that the greatest impact any of us can have is in enabling others to go further and achieve more

In his acceptance speech he made three points:

That life goes faster than you think so be ambitious and don’t be put off by advice that says you are not ready for any particular challenge.

That the greatest privilege is to coach others and so when they ask for help say yes. Then ask them to do the same for someone who approaches them in that way even if it’s years from now.

That although work is important family, friends and health matter just as much and are what enable you to do what you do professionally so don’t neglect them.

Peter received his award from Prof Tracey Daszkiewicz, the President of the Faculty at the annual awards ceremony in London on the 15th June.
