A new “FIGO Textbook of Pregnancy Hypertension” has been launched at the 2016 World Congress of the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists in Birmingham.  The publisher is the ‘Global Library of Women’s Medicine”, a non-profit resource for publishing and disseminating high quality open-access materials on women’s health. Professor William Stones, who co-edited the textbook commented: ‘Hypertensive disease remains a major cause of serious complications and death in childbirth.  It causes a large proportion of maternal deaths, stillbirths and newborn complications globally, especially in low resource countries.  While our knowledge of the optimal clinical management of pre-eclampsia and eclampsia has greatly increased in recent years, in many settings the essential elements of care are still not reaching women.  For example, we find in many countries that women are attending for antenatal visits in large numbers but do not receive basic care such as blood pressure measurement and testing of the urine for protein.  Where complications of hypertension develop, practitioners often struggle to deal with the consequences.  This freely available authoritative text  brings together research findings and experience from many parts of the world.  It will assist practitioners and policy makers to focus effort on those aspects of care planning and quality of provision that really make a difference and save the lives of mothers and babies’.
