Fieldwork in Mozambique
MSc Global Health Implementation student, Imogen Hawley recently returned from Mozambique where she conducted fieldwork funded by the Kozinn Trust and School of Medicine. Her research explored a youth-centred health programme geared toward educating adolescents about important quality of life issues such as HIV/AIDS and gender equality through community-based workshops, projects, training, and exchanges of arts and culture. Imogen’s research interests include understanding the cultural aspects that determine applied behavioural communication programmes’ success. Part of her research involved observing theatre productions that youths develop to discuss problems such as malaria and premature marriage with their communities. She was also witness to other global and public health efforts in Mozambique, including a bed-net distribution for malaria, a literacy programme, and an NGO delivering nutrient fortified seeds to local farmers. Other lessons from the Global Health Implementation course were put into perspective when visiting a district hospital and rural clinic during her trip. Her master’s dissertation will be complete by the end of August this summer.
