Winners of the British Journal of Nursing ‘Nurse of the Year’ Award 2016
For the
Scottish Dermatological Nursing Society (SDNS) Masterclass in Psychosocial Aspects of Care
Polly Buchanan, PhD Student , School of Medicine (Health Psychology), Lead Nurse, Research and Development, NHS Fife, was named as a winner of BJN Nurse of the Year Award 2016 for dermatology nursing .
Polly , Chair of the Scottish Dermatological Nursing Society, is a member of a team who designed, implemented and evaluated a 3 day Masterclass in psychosocial aspects of care, a quality initiative developed under the auspices of the Scottish Dermatological Nursing Society (SDNS). This is the first of its kind in dermatology within Scotland. Other members of the SDNS team include Karen Stephen, NHS Tayside, Janice Bianchi, Independent Medical Educator and Zoe Chouliara, Edinburgh Napier University.
Addressing the psycho-social needs of patients is essential to the success of any dermatological intervention and can improve patient experiences and outcomes. The SDNS team developed the Masterclass to be applicable for all Health Care Professionals with an interest in dermatology and who wish to enhance their practice in meeting patients’ psychosocial needs.
The Masterclass has run successfully for two years in Scotland and will soon be available throughout the UK. Evaluation demonstrated that the course met participants’ expectations and improved their confidence and competence in addressing psychosocial needs of patients. Polly presented this work at the British Association of Dermatologists’ UK Psychodermatology annual meeting in London and is lead author on the paper which has been accepted for publication (Health Psychology Update) in 2016.
