Senior Bioinformatician Ramon Fallon recently visited Dundee and Angus College Gardyne Campus and Webster High School, Kirriemuir.  This was part of ex-University of St Andrews, now University of Edinburgh, Daniel Barker’s 4273pi initiative to teach schools about bioinformatics.  A 3 hour workshop,  taught Biology students about mutations, how to use blast to search for homologous genes and how to use the command-line for bioinformatics on the Raspberry Pi.

Currently the standard textbook only has one page devoted to Bioinformatics. Ramon was there to assist the groups get through the worksheet and answer their questions.  One of the pupils, unprompted, wrote the picture’s comments onto a file for testing.
