Multimorbidity in the context of harmful alcohol use

Dr Nina MacKenzie is a PhD Fellow at St Andrews University on the Multimorbidity PhD programme for Health Professionals funded by the Wellcome Trust. Her research aims to explore factors associated with, and outcomes from, harmful alcohol use in Scotland. Using a combination of a systematic review, analysis of large-scale linked electronic health records, and interviews with affected individuals her work will address several objectives:

  • Synthesise any existing research on the prevalence of multimorbidity (MM) in people with alcohol-related conditions and the associated clinical and demographic factors.
  • Describe the incidence and prevalence of alcohol MM (in relation to preselected time points of interest), the influence of demographic and clinical factors, and identify common clusters of long-term conditions.
  • Examine associations between alcohol MM and outcomes, overall and by condition clusters, in relation to demographic and clinical factors and explore the development of MM in people with alcohol-attributable conditions.
  • Explore the healthcare experiences of individuals with alcohol multimorbidity, including how problem alcohol use impacts the assessment and management of concurrent long-term conditions (and vice versa), and perceived barriers and facilitators to care.
