General practitioner and Senior Lecturer at the University of St Andrews. Her PhD was in conflicts of interest in medicine. Margaret is a Founder and Director of the Centre for Evidence and Values in healthcare.<\/h4>\n

Chair in Leadership and Governance at the Business School and has particular interests in organisations in society, leading and managing. Kevin is a Founder of the Centre for Evidence and Values in healthcare.<\/h4>\n

Dr Joseph Millum <\/b><\/u><\/span><\/a><\/h2>\n

Senior Lecturer in Philosophy, and as a bioethicist, is a consultant to the World Health Organisation. He is Chairperson of the International Society for Priorities in Health.\u00a0 Joseph is a Founder of the Centre for Evidence and Values in healthcare.<\/h4>\n

Mrs Katrin Metsis <\/b><\/u><\/span><\/a><\/h2>\n

Social scientist and doctoral research fellow in the Population and Behavioural Science Division in the School of Medicine. She is interested in health inequalities and collaborates with Dr McCartney on research projects.\u00a0 Katrin is the Research Assistant for the Centre for Evidence and Values in heathcare.<\/h4>\n

Why the multi-disciplinary approach with Medicine, Business and Philosophy?<\/strong><\/h1>\n

 <\/p>\n

School of Medicine:<\/strong> Dr Margaret McCartney says the impulse to create something like this was building for a long time. \u201cThere have been so many things that have gone badly wrong in healthcare. Why did that happen? Was it predictable? Could you have learned from the past a bit more than perhaps you appear to have done?\u201d The Centre, she says, is meant to be a place where evidence-based medicine and ethical questions can be discussed together, \u201cbecause quite often there\u2019s been patient harm as a result of those two things not being adequately considered\u201d.<\/h4>\n

 <\/p>\n

Business School:<\/strong> \u201cOften we revert to our own silos, and we look at things in isolation from each other,\u201d Professor Kevin Orr says. \u201cBut the complexity and the importance of questions around healthcare are best addressed through an interdisciplinary lens. That\u2019s the gap the Centre is hopefully filling.\u201d<\/h4>\n

 <\/p>\n

School of Philosophy:<\/strong> Dr Joseph Millum, who spent 15 years as a bioethicist at the United States National Institutes of Health (NIH), sees evidence and values as inseparable rather than competing. \u201cWhere things go wrong is where people think that evidence or scientific data can operate independently of value judgements.\u201d Decisions about whether to expand primary care, build hospitals or train more nurses, he argues, are always both empirical and ethical. \u201cThe evidence is going to tell us what we end up with. The values will help us assess which policy options we prefer. The mistake is to think that they are independent.\u201d<\/h4>\n
