But working with industry can also bring benefits to patients, and the universities and government are often keen to support those relationships. So how do we handle it? For years we have been told that transparency is key \u2013 but supposing this isn\u2019t enough to stop conflicts \u2013 and might just be making us feel more comfortable with them?<\/p>\n<p>The Centre for Evidence and Values in Healthcare invites you to join us at a fully online event, on the 22nd October 2026. Join us between 2 \u2013 4:30pm to discuss and explore the issues created by conflicting interests in healthcare.\u00a0 Understand what impact these could be having on patients and the public, and importantly what we need to think about when faced with them. This event will be helpful for policymakers, clinicians, journalists, civil servants, academics, healthcare managers, healthcare students, academics, patients and politicians. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.st-andrews.ac.uk\/medicine\/people\/mm494\/\"><strong>Dr Margaret McCartney<\/strong><\/a><strong>, <\/strong>Founder and Director of The Centre for Evidence and Values in Healthcare, Senior Lecturer, and GP, has researched and published extensively on this subject and is passionate about the need to reduce patient harm caused by financial conflicts of interest.<\/p>\n<p>We are delighted to welcome\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/civilservicecommission.independent.gov.uk\/about\/civil-service-commissioners\/\"><strong>Baroness Gisela Stuart<\/strong><\/a>, First Civil Service Commissioner, who will set the overall scene considering <strong>why integrity matters in civic life<\/strong>.\u00a0 Baroness Stuart served as an MP from 1997 until 2017, working as a government minister between 1999 to 2001.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Joining us are expert speakers and discussants<\/strong> who will explore conflicting interests from varying angles:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sunitasah.com\/\"><strong>Dr Sunita Sah<\/strong><\/a><strong>,<\/strong> Professor of Management &amp; Organizations and Organizational Psychologist, Cornell SC Johnson College of Business; Core Faculty Fellow, Cornell Health Policy Center; Professor of Organizational Behaviour, University College London Global Business School for Health.\u00a0 Sunita will explore the paradoxes of disclosure and the moral duties of professionals in a talk entitled <strong>\u2018Transparency and Trust\u2019<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>An <strong>\u2018Interview with&#8217;<\/strong>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/authwall?trk=bf&amp;trkInfo=AQGoRGnOZ9O6ZgAAAaAaPkZg7LuclSAKPwvgVIg8w-diYQ0BYqK6yvdBDC63P_N8lVezn7sLWXWVXsF2CCOEBBzLyA7mmI_8qv3kE-DyxqH_ONks-XpPZOtgD4JTBDHV7PsgmkE=&amp;original_referer=&amp;sessionRedirect=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.linkedin.com%2Fin%2Fdavid-rowland-a3790217b%2F\"><strong>David Rowland<\/strong><\/a>, Director of the Centre for Health and Public Interest (CHPI) and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/rebecca-coombes-0a4a613a\/\"><strong>Rebecca Coombes<\/strong><\/a>,\u00a0 Head of Journalism at The BMJ, will be hosted by <a href=\"https:\/\/people.rcsi.com\/larkinjames\"><strong>Dr James Larkin<\/strong><\/a>, Senior Postdoctoral Fellow, at the Royal College of Surgeons of Ireland. Speakers looked at the growing influence of private finance on public services and asked how contracts can be designed to keep the public good at the centre of decision-making.
